The term “chemical exfoliant” sounds a little scary, even if you’re a major skincare fanatic, but just because you hear the word chemical, doesn’t mean you should go running for the hills. When it comes to exfoliating, chemical exfoliants are one of the best things you can use on your skin.
For many years, facial scrubs have been the go to in exfoliating, but thankfully those days are gone. Not all scrubs are bad, but not all are created equal either. Although some scrub exfoliants can be fine for skin (such as ones with rice powder or jojoba beads) many scrubs contain harsh particles which can damage the skin, causing micro tears (and capillaries) they can also irritate sensitive skin and damage the top most layer of the skin if used too frequently. Additionally, scrubs are terrible for those with acne as they can open up pimples and spread bacteria around the skin.
What are Chemical Exfoliants? BHA’S/AHA’S/Glycolic Acid,Lactic Acid, and Enzymes
Alpha Hydroxy Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acid are two ingredients that can sound a little daunting at first, but don’t panic just yet.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid’s: Alpha Hydroxy Acid’s (most commonly written as AHA’s) are perhaps the most popular and widespread variation of chemical exfoliants. AHA’s vary in different doses meaning you can pick and choose which exfoliant is best for your skintype and level of sensitivity. Glycolic and Lactic acid are forms of AHA’s so take note of the ingredient listings on your products. AHA’s are generally best for drier, combination, and sensitive skin types.
Beta Hydroxy Acid’s: Beta Hydroxy Acid’s (BHA’s for short) are the grown up sister of Alpha Hydroxy Acid’s, they are a bit more intense and have a deeper exfoliating action. They really get deep into the skin and often have anti inflammatory/anti bacterial properties. Salycic Acid (an ingredient commonly used in spot treatments) is one example of a BHA exfoliant. They’re the best type of exfoliant someone with acne prone, oily, and congested skin can use.
Enzymes: Enzyme exfoliants are generally derived from some variation of fruits,the most popular being Papaya and Pineapple. Sort of like when you get that funny feeling on your tongue after eating pineapple (which is the enzymes working), enzymes gently exfoliate the skin helping to remove any flaky skin and uneven texture. Enzyme exfoliants generally tend to be a more gentle form of exfoliation.
